Seeking new music

16 Jun

I finally followed this formula to calculate my play density! I lost all of my play count data when my computer died last November, so no one can mock me for having Jesus Take The Wheel in my top 25 anymore. It turns out listening to albums on repeat makes a boring list. But I think #36 — part three of an Agatha Christie mystery — makes it worth sharing. Apparently it took eight listens to figure out who killed everyone.

A game of HORSESHOES!

Text message from Seelander: “Come to tennessee.”

For the cut salty boys who love to get drunk? TEMPTING. What’s hotter than a man casually backing a trailer into a gas station? I mean it.

Anyway, receiving this text made me happy because 1) Seelander! 2)I love being invited to things and 3)it immediately put this song in my head.

Another reason to love Iowa

Here are some compelling reasons to love the internet. Maybe you know them all, maybe you don’t. (I already shared some of them in my Google reader, if we’re friends there.)

Radio Lab Podcast. I will seriously tear up talking about this because it’s sooOOOo goOOOd. It’s like the very best of This American Life, but SCIENCE. And never douchey. Lucia and 11 frogs told me about it a few months ago when I asked for recommendations and I tore through their archives immediately. I have a crush on Jad Abumrad. A big one. They are two months away from the next season and for now just releasing short pieces.

The Morning News. Links to other news sites but they also write their own stuff. My favorite features are the advice column, The Non-Expert (GO READ How To Say I Love You YOU WILL LOL) and the Letters From section. Right now Rosecrans Baldwin is writing from Paris and Jil Wheeler from Mumbai. I signed Whitney up for their map quiz and I think he won something already.

Sweet Juniper. Husband and wife blogging team. Where the Fleet Foxes cover I posted came from. I want them to invite me over to dinner.

A Cup of Tea and a Wheat Penny. Actually, the Fleet Foxes cover came from here and Sweet Juniper linked to that. So I just started reading it. Pretty great.

Grace Undressed. Former exotic dancer trying to quit the business. She can write.

Pandora. Okay, I know, everyone knows about Pandora. But it saved me while my ipod was broken and the channel I created (Fleet Foxes + Andrew Bird) led me to Slowreader. TRY Politics Music and Drugs – VERY CATCHY.

I can’t get enough of this album cover. I wish I had a poster for my room. I am weak for wet beards.

Zombie!

Too soon to call him alive, but he’s definitely undead.

[Updated to add: Works!]

If you like Fleet Foxes

Emma, you fool

I just saw Bon Iver. Having been warned that they had the stage presence of corrugated cardboard, my expectations were low. But they rocked. They rocked! In fact, by El Scorcho’s description, I’m not convinced he actually saw Bon Iver. I didn’t detect any overt Swedishness, main man Justin Vernon played several guitars, and it was easy to understand him. I may be biased because I want to jump the drummer, Sean Carey, but I don’t think so. They were good. My favorite song was The Wolves (Act I and II) because it ended with an instrumental freak out, with a particularly athletic performance on the drums. I might as well turn this into an installment of who would I do and a hat. Sean Carey, I would do you. Come back to Iowa City soon. I have a hunch you smell good. I’ll make you pancakes. Even your name is hot. Sean Carey. I wonder how often you google yourself, Sean Carey, Sean Carey.

You can just barely see him here at about 1:13. At least I think that’s him. Give them another chance, Madison. They’re playing your town next Friday. Only $10.

Oh, and the hat. My second floppiest. Penultimate flop.

Floppy hat

I do still have more winter hats to share, but I couldn’t bring myself to put one on since it was 100% spring today.
